3rd Grade Sample Proficiency Tests and Assessments
In many states, 3rd graders have to take proficiency and assessment tests on math and reading. Keep reading for information on helping your child get prepared using sample tests.
Sample tests can help your child get used to concentrating on test questions for long periods of time. They can also introduce your child to the type of questions that will be asked on such exams. Check your state's Board of Education website to see if there are free sample tests available.
Released Tests from the Texas Education Agency
Even if you can find sample tests from your own state, you can still use the 3rd grade proficiency sample tests provided by the Texas Education Agency. The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, called the TAKS, is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The TAKS is presented in a multiple-choice format and usually covers math, science and English/language arts.
The state of Texas releases the TAKS with answer keys every three years, so the practice tests will always be fresh for your 3rd grader. The current exams are from 2009. In addition to the released TAKS, you can also download study guides from the Texas Education Agency.
Lawrence Virtual School's Sample Assessments
Starting in the 3rd grade, kids in Kansas must take the Kansas State Assessments. At Lawrence Virtual School's site, you'll find 3rd grade practice exams for reading and math. Like the TAKS and most other 3rd grade assessment exams, these practice tests are multiple-choice. In addition, there are also other study tools, such as a math vocabulary assessment chart.
Free Home Assessments from EasyCBM
EasyCBM is a free assessment tool for your 3rd grader. The assessments here cover math and reading for grades K-8. In 2006, the federal Office of Special Education Programs gave a grant to researchers at the University of Oregon to develop EasyCBM. These assessments are designed to help you set educational benchmarks for your child and monitor his or her progress. You'll need to register to the site and create an account; however, there is no charge.
