3rd Grade State Test Prep and Practice

Although standardized tests vary from state to state, most 3rd graders take assessments in reading and math. The following websites provide sample tests and fun ways to help your child prepare.

EDinformatics's Practice Tests

The Department of Education in most states provides practice tests, but you can also check EDinformatics, which offers printable and archived tests from previous years for several different states. Because the majority of 3rd grade standardized tests cover reading and math, your child can use any state's practice exams to review.

If you click on the link for Illinois, for example, you'll be taken to a page that offers interactive 3rd grade tests in math and reading. These tests must be completed online and are instantly graded. The reading test includes a story with multiple-choice comprehension questions. Although the math sample questions are also multiple-choice, you might want to provide your child with scrap paper so he can solve the problem on his own. Other state tests available via EDinformatics have printable test booklets.

Online Test Preparation at Prepdog.com

Here, your child can review 3rd grade skills through online practice tests in math, language and reading. The test questions are submitted by teachers and align with the RIT Scale and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) outlined by the Northwest Evaluation Association. There are several multiple-choice tests in each subject at the basic, proficient and advanced levels. For each test, your child chooses her answers from a drop-down menu. At the bottom of the test is a button she can click on to check her work.

Practice Worksheets from Have Fun Teaching

Print out math and reading worksheets for your child from HaveFunTeaching.com. The worksheets are short, so your 3rd grader can review without having to concentrate for an extended period of time. Each test is a PDF file, so you have to print it out. Answers are included. The reading excerpts acquaint your child with a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. The math worksheets cover place value and basic arithmetic.
