Finding and Creating 4th Grade Work at Home

It's likely that your child's school bases its 4th grade curriculum on the Common Core State Standards. These national standards are used to ensure that kids across the country are learning the same content, often in preparation for standardized exams. When you're creating work and exercises for your 4th grader at home, you can use these standards to get a sense of what your child should be learning.

Education stores, both online and in the real world, can be a good source of school work for your child, but buying these products can be costly. To save money, consider searching the Internet for free or low-cost 4th grade worksheets, games, activities and lesson plans, or making your own at home.

Lessons and Assignment Ideas

Math

In math, your 4th grader is most likely covering very basic pre-algebra, measurements, data, geometry and base ten operations. To give your child extra practice in these areas, assign review worksheets based on lessons from school or upcoming test content. For example, if your child is learning to multiply two-digit numbers, assign five problems and have her solve them without your help. When she's finished, look over her work and help her correct any issues.

Reading and Writing

Reading comprehension, reading fluency and writing skills are all important in 4th grade. To improve your child's reading fluency, practice reading aloud with him. You can have your child read an entire story aloud or alternate reading each paragraph or page with him. After completing the story, reinforce comprehension and critical thinking skills by discussing the characters and plot with him.

Then, you can help your child practice writing by having him compose a paragraph that summarizes the story or explains his thoughts and opinions about the text. For a more creative assignment, ask your child to predict what will happen to a particular character in the future.

Science

In the 4th grade, it's likely that your child will study basic concepts in areas like life science and earth science. One sample project you could do with your child is to study the dehydration process by making dried apple rings. Core an apple, chop it up, slice it thinly, sprinkle it with sugar and cinnamon and use an oven to dehydrate the apple slowly. Have your child create a chart to map the dehydration process.
