How to Help Your Child Prepare for the 4th Grade ELA Test

What's the 4th Grade ELA Test?

Fourth graders in New York take the ELA (English/Language Arts) test every year in the late spring or early summer. The exam is designed to assess students' mastery of the 4th grade English and language arts learning standards for New York State. Like a lot of standardized tests, the ELA test is also used to assess the level of your child's class and determine if it's up to the standards set by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002.

The 4th grade ELA test typically has short reading passages followed by multiple-choice questions. The passages are both fiction and nonfiction. The questions your child will need to answer cover everything from reading comprehension to spelling, punctuation and grammar.

What Can My Child Do to Get Ready?

There are several ways that your child can prepare for the 4th grade ELA test. Have your child to read as often as possible. Reading frequently strengthens the comprehension and fluency skills children need for the test and can be a lot of fun. You can ensure your child enjoys reading by helping him or her select appropriate books that are entertaining and at the correct reading level.

Throughout the 4th grade school year, consult with your child's school regularly to ensure that your child is learning the appropriate material. Help your child in any area where it's needed. Maintain a space for your child to work and keep your child on a consistent study schedule.

How Can My Child Prepare With Practice Exams?

Your child can also prepare for the 4th grade ELA test by completing practice tests, which are available from the New York State Department of Education. You may also be able to get sample exam questions from your child's school. By completing practice tests, your child will get used to the types of problems on the ELA test and will feel comfortable on the test day. When administering a practice ELA to your child, recreate a quiet testing environment and time your child as he or she reads and answers the questions.

What Else Can Help My Child Prepare for the ELA Test?

There are a wide variety of different websites designed to help kids master the 4th grade learning standards. Many websites offer fun and educational games, activities, puzzles and worksheets. There are also sites that offer homework and reading help.

If your child is having a hard time with any aspect of English or language arts, sometimes hiring a tutor can help. There are many different types of tutors to choose from. Some are private, some work for big, national companies and some are available over the Internet. Libraries and learning centers can also be useful when your child's getting ready for the 4th grade ELA Test.
