Help from the New York City and State Education Departments

The New York State Education Department has practice ELA exams on its website. You can download three 4th grade test books and one listening selection for the most recent 4th grade sample ELA test. Tests from 2006-2010 are also available here, as well as sample teacher directions and answer keys.

In addition to these practice resources, there's also information about the exam from the New York City Department of Education that may be useful to you and your child. At this site you can find out what's on the exam, how the tests are scored and how the results are reported and used. You may also want to download the New York State Learning standards, since that's what the ELA is based on.

Mount Sinai School District's ELA Practice

The Mount Sinai School District's website offers a number of 4th grade reading passages and multiple-choice practice questions on its ELA Practice Page. Your child can read these passages and scroll down to the questions. To answer each question, your child simply must click the response with the cursor. A pop-up window will report whether the answer was correct or not.

A typical passage that your child will read here is entitled 'Little Flying Helpers'. It's a 6-paragraph informative article about ladybugs. It's followed by six multiple-choice questions that will test your child on reading comprehension, attention to detail, vocabulary, fluency and logic.
