Know the National Standards
Although the exact curriculum students are taught in 4th grade social studies classes varies from school to school, there are some basic overall standards that are usually covered. Being familiar with these standards and knowing what you can expect to learn in this class can help you prepare for it. Community Living: Students learn how families and communities live and work together currently and how they conducted themselves and connected in the past. They also learn about the differences in communities throughout the history of North America.
History of Your State or Region: In the 4th grade, students will also learn about the state they are living in through their social studies class. They'll learn about important historical figures from their state and about major events, problems and ideas that are a part of its history.
History of the United States: Students learn about the creation of the United States and the important people who made various impacts in society. They will also learn about the government and the creation of democracy.
Cultures of the World: Finally, students will learn about many different cultures throughout the world and how they compare/contrast to cultures in the United States. In addition, they will learn about the contributions of these various cultures to society as a whole.
Tips for Success in Class
To succeed in your 4th grade social studies class, you'll need to pay attention in class. Social studies classes usually involve a lot of presentations, and you'll need to learn the information to do well on class assignments, homework and tests. For this reason, you may want to take notes and actively participate in class. In addition, since you'll be learning a lot of new terms and about numerous people in history, you may want to create flash cards to use for studying.
