4th Grade Tutoring Books: Top Books for Fourth Graders to Read in Tutoring Lessons
Books for 4th grade tutoring may be difficult to find, but there are several online sources for teachers that can be adapted for tutoring sessions. You may find full workbooks and excerpts, in addition to sample standardized reading and language arts tests from several states.
4th Grade Tutoring Books and Resources
If you tutor a 4th grade student, you may be looking for materials to use during tutoring sessions. There are very few books specifically for 4th grade tutors, but you can find resources for classroom teachers and adapt the ideas for one-on-one tutoring sessions. You can find workbooks that contain readings with corresponding activities, as well as study materials for state standardized reading tests. Some of these resources are available for free online, but others are only available for purchase.
What 4th Grade Tutoring Books Are Available?
You may find free online resources offered through school districts, such as the Texas Journeys student e-book, which provides extra vocabulary and reading comprehension practice for 4th graders (www.hisd.com). Students can read fiction and nonfiction passages, answer questions and complete suggested activities. Also, look for free, printable sample pages from workbooks available for purchase, like the Summer Language Arts Review from Tri-C Publications (www.summerskills.com).
Reading activity books are also available for purchase through several publishers. Scholastic offers several workbooks containing a variety of activities and projects related to fiction and nonfiction readings (www.scholastic.com). Perfection Learning also publishes reading comprehension workbooks to help students meet national or state reading standards (www.perfectionlearning.com).
What Other Resources Can I Use?
Other free online sources that may be useful for tutoring 4th graders in reading include practice exams for standardized tests. These resources are similar to workbooks in that they typically include passages for your student to read, followed by questions that assess his or her comprehension skills. Some of these resources are printable, but others require online access for completion.
The Illinois State Board of Education offers a free online sample of the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) for 4th grade readers (www.isbe.net). You can also find sample reading excerpts and assessment questions from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (www.eed.state.ak.us). Sample standardized tests from different states, including California and Texas, are available at kidsnewsroom.org. The Georgia Department of Education offers study guides for the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT), and CRCT sample tests are available to download and print at numerous websites (www.doe.k12.ga.us).
