5th Grade Reading Games on the Internet
Getting kids to read at home can be a struggle for parents. Engaging, standards-based activities help students practice what they have been taught. The Internet is a great place to find short, interactive reading games that are both educational and fun.
Interactive Games from Reading Is Fundamental
Reading Is Fundamental's (RIF) Reading Planet has activities and games to support 5th grade reading. Kids can join the Reading Planet Club or visit the activity lab and game station for more reading projects. In the activity lab, you'll find a variety of hands-on exercises that can be done at home using everyday materials. For instance, one activity includes conducting nutrition research from cereal boxes. For another activity, your child can make a family history book by interviewing relatives and using family photographs.
The Book Zone lets kids select age-appropriate books to create their own book lists. They're also given an opportunity to write and submit a book review online. Choose Your Own Adventure lets kids actually read a book online and write a review.
Activities from National Geographic
Nat Geo Games allows kids to read and interact with scientific and historic topics through games and activities. In Salem Lost Chronicles, kids learn about the Salem witch trials by searching for clues to solve a mystery and interacting with actual participants.
The Nat Geo Kids site has more games to encourage reading. Quiz Your Noodle teaches a subject by asking questions, which leads to further inquiry on related topics. Similarly, animal and travel quizzes will test your child's knowledge and motivate him or her to read more on the topics.
Funbrain Activities
Funbrain introduces 5th graders to reading games and activities that will motivate and inspire them to read more. Kids can read an online version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney and complete related activities. Illustrated comics geared to a 5th grade interest level are also available to read online.
The game called Grammar Gorilla helps practice parts of speech and can be set at a beginning or advanced level. Rooting Out Words has word root tutorials and beginning to advanced levels of play. In addition, a page for parents lists resources by grade level and other recommended sites.
