5th Grade Reading TAKS Test Practice

Many students in Texas take the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) for reading every year beginning in the 3rd grade. On the 5th grade TAKS test, your child will typically be required to read passages and answer multiple-choice questions, which address reading fluency and comprehension. Keep reading to learn about resources that can help your 5th grader be prepared.

Study Guides and Practice Exams from the Texas Education Agency

The skills assessed on the TAKS test are based on the Texas core learning standards, which are called the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Before your child begins to study for the TAKS, you may want to review the TEKS to see exactly what skills he or she struggles with. The downloadable study guides available from the Texas Education Agency are a convenient and thorough way to do this. In addition to TEKS information, the 5th grade reading study guide includes information on helping your child get prepared, learning objectives, reading selections, practice questions and answer keys.

Shortly before the test, your child can take a practice test. Every few years, the Texas Education Agency releases new practice tests. The most recent ones are from 2009 and are available both in English and Spanish. You can either view the reading test online in your browser or download it as a PDF file.

More Practice from State Representative Scott Hochberg

For an alternate source of released TAKS tests, look no further than Texas State Representative Scott Hochberg's website. Though the content is the same as the Texas Education Agency, here, your child can take the test online and have it instantly graded. Take a look at the released exams on both websites in order to determine which one you and your child find preferable.

Standardized Exam Help from EDinformatics

EDinformatics is a strong resource for information about standardized tests around the entire country. At this website, you can find practice questions, released tests, information and links for a wide variety of standard tests, including the TAKS. The core 5th grade learning standards for many states are similar to the TEKS. For this reason, EDinformatics is useful when it comes to finding study resources beyond the ones provided by the state of Texas.
