SpellingVocabularyCity's Spelling Games

To review for the upcoming spelling test, let your child play the spelling games at SpellingVocabularyCity. Kids enter their spelling words on the home page and then select from various activities to practice spelling them. The program will generate, quizzes, lessons, flash cards and games using the words provided. In addition, the computer scores the quizzes for immediate feedback. If you complete the site's free registration, you can save spelling tests for review. Many activities can also be printed out.

Speedy Speller lets you use your own words or a pre-made list that includes words from popular books. Kids race against the clock or other students by typing the words as they are read. Another game, called 'WhichWord?' allows kids to practice context clues by using the correct word to complete a sentence. You can use your own word list or select from topics.

Discovery Education's Puzzlemaker

Puzzlemaker, available through Discovery Education, lets you enter your own words to make puzzles online for downloading. Step-by-step instructions help you create a variety of puzzles, including word searches, crosswords, mazes and cryptograms. You also have the option of selecting a pre-made puzzle.

Online Spelling Tests from HomeSpellingWords.com

HomeSpellingWords.com lets parents create their own spelling test using their child's spelling list from school. First, you type in your child's weekly spelling list. Then the computer reads each word and your child types in the correct spelling. This process gives you a break from reading the words aloud yourself and provides a mix of verbal and visual teaching formats.

The program has 21 pre-selected word lists for 5th grade. In addition, you can select spelling lists from grades 1-8 if you want to review older lessons or preview what to expect as your child advances in school. Registration is free, but required, and a demo is available for you to preview the site before making a decision to join.
