Overview of the 5th Grade Math TAKS

What's on the Test?

If your child will be taking the STAAR math exam, reviewing with TAKS practice tests can be helpful. Since the STAAR assessment is new, there are not many practice questions available for it. Furthermore, the material covered by both tests is similar. Like the TAKS for 5th grade math, the STAAR exam contains multiple-choice questions on number operations, algebraic reasoning, geometry, measurement, probability and statistics.

What Review Materials Are Available?

Although your child is preparing for the Texas state math assessment at school, he or she will likely benefit from taking a practice test at home. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) offers a free practice exam on its website. The test can be completed online, and it is graded instantly. The practice test contains 44 questions, so it's not as long as the real test; however, it will give your 5th grader a taste of what to expect.

You can also download a PDF version of the exam that your child can complete offline. These tests are available in English and Spanish. Scoring guides are provided so you can check your child's work. You may want to keep track of any patterns in the questions your child answers incorrectly so you'll know what to review.

Study Guides

In addition to practice tests, the TEA offers PDF study guides designed for parents and students to complete together. The guides include lessons for each objective that will be tested. Additionally, there are instructions for parents, as well as activities and practice questions for students to complete.

How Else Can I Help My Child Prepare?

When your child takes practice tests at home, you can address any test-taking issues he or she has. For instance, some students suffer from test anxiety, while other kids are intimidated by the strict time limit.
