5th Grade TAKS Study Guide and Practice Test

The Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, often referred to as the TAKS, is a state-issued standardized test. It's used to assess students in elementary through high school in mathematics, English/language arts and - in some grades - science and social studies. Keep reading for information on how you can help your 5th grader get ready at home.

The TAKS is administered in the spring to Texas 5th graders in public schools and many private schools. It's based on the core learning standards for the state, called the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). The exam is multiple-choice and divided into three main sections: math, reading and science.

TAKS Tools from Texas Education Agency

The Texas Education Agency may be your most valuable resource when helping your child prepare for the TAKS. You can download up-to-date, newly revised TAKS study guides from the Texas Education Agency's website. These guides address the sections and objectives of the TAKS, as well as lay out what the 5th grade TEKS are.

In addition to these study guides, you can also download practice tests for your child to take at home. Every three years, the Texas Education Agency releases the most recent TAKS exams in English and Spanish. The tests that you can download right now are from 2009.

Downloadable Practice Tests from Scott Hochberg's Website

State representative Scott Hochberg's website also provides free, downloadable TAKS tests that your child can use for practice. Although these exams are the same ones made available by the Texas Education Agency, they are formatted in a different way that might be preferable to you and your 3rd grader. Have a look at the TAKS on both sites and choose which you like better.

EDinformatics.com's Online Assessments

Here, you can find online standardized tests from a variety of states, including Texas. The 2003 and 2004 versions of the 3rd grade TAKS are available now in math and reading. The benefit of this site is that your child can take the tests online and the answers are graded for you. The score report lists the correct answer, your child's answer and the objective that was measured for each question, which makes it easy to spot patterns in the questions that your child answered incorrectly.
