6th Grade ELA Practice Test: Online Prep Materials

Most states give a standardized test in reading, so a good place to start for test preparation is on your state department of education's website. You can also find websites that offer English Language Arts (ELA) practice tests from various states. Other resources, like those listed below, offer ELA games and activities that can help your child practice critical skills.

ELA Practice Tests from EDinformatics

Here, you can find sample 6th grade ELA tests from several states, including New York, Massachusetts and Texas. These sample tests were administered to 6th graders in previous years, and tests from multiple years may be available for extra practice.

For the New York State test, there are three PDF test books available, and you can even print an answer document for your child to fill in. Book one includes reading passages and multiple-choice comprehension questions. Book two features short-answer questions for the listening portion of the test; the passage to be read aloud is available as a separate printout. Finally, book three includes short-answer questions and an essay prompt. Additional resources are available, including a scoring key.

Writing and Grammar Activities at Houghton Mifflin

After your 6th grader completes a practice exam, you can use the educational games and activities from Houghton Mifflin's Education Place website to work on specific skills. If your child is struggling with writing, he can evaluate his own work using the questions at 'Evaluation Station.' There are also a variety of graphic organizers that can help him put his ideas in a logical sequence. If your child needs additional practice, you can find writing prompts for different types of compositions. The games at 'Grammar Blast' can help him practice capitalization and punctuation, parts of speech, modifiers and prepositional phrases.

For additional grammar skill practice, try these tests from Prepdog.com. You can click on the green 'Language' doghouse and you'll find an assortment of online tests at basic, advanced and proficient skill levels, covering areas such as grammar and usage, punctuation and writing composition. At the end of each test your child can click 'Check Your Work' to see if she selected the correct answers. The tests are designed to accord with the U.S. Common Core State Standards, as well the Northwest Evaluation Association's RIT scale and MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) assessments.
