Fun Learning Activities for 6th Graders: Educational Games and Sites

Since they're often repetitive, games can be a helpful way for kids to review concepts. If you want your 6th grader to be engaged in learning, browse through the following websites for fun, educational games.

Reading Activities from ReadWriteThink

Here, you can sort through games, activities and lessons by grade level, learning objective and theme. Search in the Classroom Resources section for activities that you can do at home, or browse through the Parent & Afterschool Resources section for online games, activities and printouts. One online game, Fractured Fairy Tales, encourages kids to write their own version of a famous story. Many of the games on this site require Adobe Flash.

If you're looking for an activity your child can do offline, review the Activities and Projects section. There, you will find activity ideas like visiting an art museum and writing a story based on a picture. Additionally, the variety of printable worksheets and graphic organizers can help build your child's comprehension, writing and analysis skills.

Math and Science Resources from Scholastic

Scholastic offers a website designed to engage kids in math and science through online lessons and practice. In both the math and science sections, you can refine your search by picking topics and subtopics.

For instance, in the Animal section, choose from invertebrates, vertebrates, arthropods, animal cells and more. The slideshows and step-by-step lessons are helpful because they are very visual and often define key vocabulary terms. After reviewing the topic, your 6th grader can take an online multiple-choice test. This site will likely be most helpful if you know what topic your child needs to review. Alternatively, allow your child to browse through the site on his or her own and find a subject that interests him or her.

Funschool's Online Games

Search through these games for 5th and 6th graders. In the list of games, some enhance math, thinking and reading skills. Read the descriptions for each game to find out which ones will meet your child's needs. If your child is interested in ancient Egypt, for example, you might encourage him or her to play the game Aton-Ra. In this game, your child can practice spelling in a unique context.
