6th Grade Reading Skills and Concepts
In 6th grade, students apply skills they learned in earlier grades to make sense of longer and more challenging books and articles. Read on to find out more specific information about 6th grade reading skills and concepts.
Overview of 6th Grade Reading Skills and Concepts
Your 6th grade child will be focusing on how authors make their points and support their arguments. Students at this grade level will also be reading closely and citing evidence from grade-level texts to analyze what the materials say. Additionally, 6th graders expand their vocabulary and use new words in stories, reports, and essays. To meet these literacy goals, significant attention will be devoted to precise details in reading.
Fluency
Your 6th grade child will be analyzing how chapters of a book, scenes of a play or stanzas of a poem fit into the overall structure of the piece. Your child will also focus on recognizing the development of ideas or themes in literature and informational texts. Finally, your child should demonstrate reading fluency by reading aloud effortlessly with expression and clarity.
Comprehension
Comprehension goals include evaluating the argument and specific claims in written materials or a speech. In class, students will focus on distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not.
Students will also be comparing and contrasting information read in a story to information provided on the television. Teachers may use informational materials that make extensive use of elaborate diagrams and data to convey information and illustrate concepts.
Vocabulary
Another goal for your 6th grade child will be to recognize variations from standard English in writing and speaking to improve language use. Emphasis will be placed on determining the correct meaning of a word based on the context in which it's used. For example, the meaning of an unknown word can sometimes be inferred through the rest of the sentence or paragraph, the word's position or its function in the sentence.
Developing a rich vocabulary of complex and sophisticated words is a final goal for 6th grade English. In addition, your child will be practicing using words to speak and write more precisely and coherently.
