You can find several free reading comprehension worksheets from abcteach.com that are appropriate for 6th graders. All of them provide brief fiction or nonfiction passages about various subjects, followed by questions that test your child's understanding. By clicking on 'Fictional' and 'Informational' on the directory bar you can obtain more free comprehension printouts.

The worksheets open in PDF format for easy printing. Answer keys are included. Depending on the worksheet, your child may be asked to complete multiple-choice, matching and short answer questions, and some worksheets include writing prompts for brief essays.

Comprehension Practice at EnglishForEveryone.org

Your child can find a large selection of comprehension and vocabulary exercises at EnglishForEveryone.org. The worksheets are organized by genre: short story, informational, critical reading, role-play reading and a dual version, which features two versions of a story. The short story and informational sections are further divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced categories.

The worksheets contain passages that vary in length according to their level of difficulty and include colorful illustrations. The corresponding questions may cover both comprehension and vocabulary. Answer keys are available as a separate printout for most of the worksheets. However, the critical reading worksheets offer answers and explanations at the end of each printout.

Middle School Reading Exercises at Super Teacher Worksheets

If your 6th grader enjoys science, you may find the middle school worksheets at Super Teacher Worksheets to be especially useful. Not only will your child practice reading comprehension, but he or she can also read about such topics as atoms, planets and the human immune system.

Each worksheet has at least one page of text, followed by comprehension questions in short answer and multiple-choice format. Some worksheets also include vocabulary activities, like crossword and missing letter puzzles. Answers print out with each worksheet.
