6th Grade Reading Worksheets and Answer Keys

At the end of elementary school, students are expected to have advanced reading skills in preparation for middle school. If your child often struggles with reading, you can help him or her at home with printable worksheets and activities. Keep reading for an overview of some free resources.

ReadWriteThink's Reading Activities

ReadWriteThink has free online and printable activities to help students with reading comprehension. The skills covered include organizing, summarizing, inquiry, analysis and word roots. Most of the activities can be printed, saved or e-mailed. However, you may need a flash player to view and play some of the online games and activities.

In The Hero's Journey, kids take a look at the elements that make up the typical hero's journey as it relates to literature. Then they make up their own journey using the elements they've identified. Interactive crossword puzzles are also available which allow kids to practice content area vocabulary. They can create their own crossword or play one produced by the website.

Make-a-Word Scramble uses cards with root words, prefixes and suffixes, which kids arrange to make new words. A word root chart is included for help playing the printable game.

Printable Reading Worksheets EnglishForEveryone.org

EnglishForEveryone.org has a variety of reading comprehension worksheets designed to improve children's comprehension and vocabulary skills while they learn about an interesting subject. The activities are available at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

Each passage lists the number of words and questions it contains. Your 6th grade child can select titles from various categories, such as short stories, informational texts and critical reading passages. Answer keys with explanations are included.

One worksheet, called Great Debates, features a critical reading passage about the 1960 Kennedy and Nixon debates, followed by detail and inference questions. Other passages requiring similar types of responses include Tattoo and Accused.

Reading Worksheets from Teach-nology

Teach-nology has a variety of free reading worksheets and activities available to use on its website. Activities that focus on the author's purpose have kids read short passages and decide if the author's intent was to persuade, inform or entertain. Reading comprehension worksheets have kids read a short passage and answer general questions.
