How Can I Help My 6th Grader Study Science?

If your child needs help with 6th grade science homework, you may want to start by asking the teacher what your child is struggling with. Many teachers are also willing to meet individually with students to provide extra assistance.

Other practice opportunities include community centers where your child can get help from local high school and college students. If you'd rather provide guidance at home, you can also find resources on the Internet. Get started today with the following ideas.

Three Science Lessons for 6th Graders

Food Chains and Webs

Food chains and food webs are typically covered in 6th grade to help students better understand organisms in different ecosystems and how they survive. For review, you can print worksheets off the Internet that ask multiple-choice questions or feature vocabulary activities. If you want your child to use his creative abilities while reviewing, you may ask him to draw a food chain or web for a designated ecosystem or write a narrative about the process.

Weather Maps

Understanding weather maps is not only a topic covered in 6th grade science, but also a skill that will be useful to students throughout their lives. To test your child's understanding of weather maps, forecasts and important terminology, like fronts and pressure systems, you can complete this activity after watching a weather report on television.

Have your child predict the next day's weather by creating a weather map using colored pencils and a blank map of the U.S. This activity will test her understanding of common weather patterns and also the appropriate symbols. The next day, you and your child can watch the weather report again and compare the still images to the prediction she mapped out.

Solar System Construction

A great way to help your 6th grader understand the solar system is by building a model at home using fun supplies. In 6th grade, students study the planets' comparative sizes. Use candy to create accurate representations of each planet. For instance, a red gumdrop could represent Mars and a cookie could represent Jupiter. Help your child construct the model, making sure he understands the reasoning for each piece. At the end, the candy and cookie components of the model can be treats for completion!
