6th Grade TAKS Review Lessons and Practice Tests

Texas 6th graders take the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) exam every spring in reading and math. For information on how you can help your child be ready for the TAKS, continue reading.

The TAKS tests are based on Texas core education standards, which are called the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills). You may want to review the TEKS to see exactly what your child needs to know. Public schools in Texas administer the TAKS, as well as many private schools. Although it's likely that your child's 6th grade schoolwork will help him or her be prepared for the test, the Internet can also be a useful resource for supplemental materials.

EDinformatics' Interactive TAKS Preparation

For an interactive exam resource, look no further than EDinformatics. Here, you can find practice TAKS assessments from previous years. The practice exams must be taken online and feature multiple-choice questions. After your child has finished the exam, review his or her score with the convenient answer page, which compares the right answer to your child's answer. It also indicates which standard was tested in each question.

Study Guides and Tests from the Texas Education Agency

The Texas Education Agency's website offers downloadable TAKS study guides. These guides include essential information about the TEKS, the objectives of the TAKS exam and test sections. In these study guides are activities, so you can use the math and reading study guides for at-home review lessons.

There are also practice exams available from the Texas Education Agency. Every three years, the state of Texas releases tests your 6th grader can use to study. The tests that you can currently download are from 2009 and are available in both English and Spanish.

Released Exams from Scott Hochberg

Texas State Representative Scott Hochberg also offers downloadable released tests from his website. Although these are the same tests available from the Texas Education Agency, the formatting differs. You can check out the released exams at both sides and choose which ones you and your 6th grader like better. The exams at Scott Hochberg's site come with a cover sheet with TAKS facts on it, answer keys and test objectives.
