Tutoring for 6th Grade: Parent Information

Utilize the Teachers

Just like parents, teachers want their students to do well in class. You'll likely find that teachers are usually excited and eager to work with parents. In fact, many teachers will work as tutors themselves and meet with students in the morning or after school. So, it's a good idea to contact teachers about your concerns and communicate with them about the struggles your children are having in 6th grade.

School Options

In addition, schools often have tutoring programs available to the entire student body. These tutoring services may include small group skill sessions, pull-out programs or extended day instruction. Some programs are only available to students in special populations, such as those in special education or students who have been diagnosed with some form of learning disability. However, some will work with any students who are struggling academically in school or who have a history of failing state standardized tests.

Tutoring Programs

If there's a need to get extra help for your 6th grade students outside of school, you may be able to find alternative tutoring solutions in your community. Some organizations have volunteers that provide tutoring to students for free. You can also find after-school programs that your children can attend until you pick them up.

Common Areas to Address

If you plan on tutoring your children yourself, you should be aware of some common lessons and standards your children will be learning. If you know what material they will be responsible for mastering, you'll have an easier time finding resources to help them. Some of the areas they may need tutoring help with in the 6th grade are discussed below.

Language Arts- Students will need to determine figurative and connotative meaning of words and phrases in the materials they read. Finding the main idea is also a big part of 6th grade work, as well as drawing conclusions and determining the theme of a story.

Math- For math in the 6th grade, students will work with ratios to solve problems. Multiplication and division of fractions is also a big part of the 6th grade curriculum. In addition, they'll be required to work with algebraic expressions.
