Tips for Getting A's on Your English Homework

Get Organized

Start out by getting organized. Buy a notebook for your English homework and designate a special place in it where you can write down daily or weekly assignments. Make sure you have all of the handouts you need to go with the assignments. Ask your English teacher to clarify any confusion you may have about your homework.

It's also a good idea to review the grades you get on all assignments, quizzes and tests. Schedule a meeting with your English teacher if you get a low grade or you don't understand why you got a particular question wrong.

Focus in Class

Homework is given to solidify what you've learned in class, so you'll need to pay attention and take notes in order to complete it successfully. For example, if your teacher has discussed setting or theme, write down the relevant definitions and examples. Later, when you do your literature homework, you can refer back to these notes in order to answer the assigned questions.

Review Your Writing

In 7th grade, you'll probably be asked to write some essays at home. Always review your essays carefully for spelling and grammar errors. Many teachers require essays to be composed on the computer, which makes it easy for students to use spell-check to look for errors. However, you should keep in mind that spell-check does not find all errors, and it may identify something as an error when it really isn't one.

The best plan is to proofread your writing yourself, without depending on spell-check. Sometimes proofreading can be more effective if you put the essay aside and recheck it later. You might also ask a parent or older sibling to check your work, and some teachers will even take the time to review your work before you turn it in for your final grade.

Extra Help

If you've done all of the above and you're still struggling in English, don't hesitate to start looking for help. Begin by asking your teacher if he or she might be able to help you before or after school. Some schools also offer after-school tutoring sessions where you can get extra help.
