7th Grade Homework: Tips for Improving

Meet with Your Teacher

When teachers explain the instructions for homework assignments, they usually think you understand if you don't tell them otherwise. Therefore, it's your responsibility to let them know when you need help. Once your teacher is aware that you need help, he or she can sit down with you one-on-one and go over the directions again. Your teacher may even work on some of the problems with you to make sure you fully comprehend the work. However, if you fail to communicate with your teachers, they will assume you will be able to handle the assignment effectively on your own.

Take Daily Notes

While in school, be actively engaged with the lessons by taking notes. Most of the time, you will be able to refer back to your notes when you get confused or stuck at home. The notes can also be used as a study resource. Furthermore, since you actually have to pay attention and focus when taking notes, doing so will usually lead to better overall comprehension of the material being taught in class.

Make a Study Schedule

Set aside time each day to do your homework, and stick to your schedule. For example, the hour before dinner, after you've had a chance to relax after school and get a snack, might be a good time. Have a beginning and an ending time (for example, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.) and use that time just for homework. Don't put it off; you may be too tired to complete your work if it's too close to bedtime. For weekend homework, it's usually best to get it done on Friday, while you can still remember the assignment well. If you do it on Friday you'll also have plenty of time to get your work done without rushing around at the last minute on Sunday night.

Avoid Distractions

When you complete assignments at home, avoid distractions, like the television or your computer. To do your best, you need to be able to concentrate. Therefore, choose a comfortable place in the house free from people walking around and making noise. In fact, you may even want to work somewhere other than your house, such as a local library or bookstore.

Check Over Your Work

One of the simplest ways to do better on 7th grade homework assignments that is often overlooked is checking over your work before turning it in. Many times, a simple review will allow you to catch errors that could have lowered your grade. You'll usually be able to find most of these mistakes on your own. However, it's not a bad idea to allow your parents or another trusted adult to check for errors as well.
