RHL School's Reading Comprehension Worksheets
RHL School offers reading comprehension worksheets for parents to download. The stories, essays, poems and articles cover many subjects of interest to upper elementary through middle school aged kids. Answer keys are included.
One worksheet, called 'Word Meanings from Context' has kids practice context clues by figuring out the missing word from a sentence. In a similar worksheet, students determine the meaning of a highlighted word by how it's used in a sentence. Both worksheets use multiple-choice questions.
Another worksheet requiring deductive reasoning skills is 'Thought Provoking Words', which has kids figure out the meaning of famous quotations. Also, in 'Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.', students match quotes to their meanings.
Interactive English Quizzes and Printable Worksheets from EnglishForEveryone.org
EnglishForEveryone.org has skill-building worksheets for reading comprehension. The worksheets are divided into beginning, intermediate and advanced levels and practice a variety of skills, such as vocabulary, sequencing, skimming and rereading. Answer keys are provided for all worksheets.
These worksheets are not just busy work; they require students to use higher order thinking skills, including using logic to make deductions, inferences and conclusions. For example, 'An Adventure' asks children to read a story, answer questions and write a short response on the subject. Another selection, 'The Runaway', asks more challenging questions and also requires students to make a decision, think about the results and write about why they made their choice.
