What Is the GED?

The GED test is for people who do not have a high school diploma. By passing the exam, you demonstrate that you have attained the knowledge and skills of a 4-year high school curriculum.

The test is divided into five subject area sections, including reading, writing, social studies, science and mathematics. It's designed to measure critical-thinking and problem-solving skills as well as communication abilities.

Who Is Eligible for the Test?

Legal residents of Arkansas who are at least 16 years old and not enrolled in school are eligible to take the test. A valid photo ID, such as a driver's license or other government-issued identification, is required for registration.

Additionally, everyone who wants to take the GED must first pass the GED practice test, which can only be taken at an approved testing center. Passing scores on the practice test are at least 410 on each test section, and the scores for all sections must total 2,250. Individuals who are 16 and 17 years old must meet certain provisions established by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Where Can I Take the GED?

The GED test must be taken at an official testing center. You can find a location on the Arkansas Department of Education website or by contacting your county adult education office. Testing is scheduled at various times of the week and on Saturdays. It takes about 7.5 hours to complete the full battery of tests, and accommodations are available for individuals with documented disabilities.

What Are Passing Scores?

Just like the practice test, a total score of 2,250 is required to pass the GED exam. In addition, no single test section score can be lower than 410. You can retake the test with no waiting period or other stipulations. However, you can't take the same test more than three times in a calendar year.

How Do I Prepare for the Test?

GED instruction is available through Arkansas adult education programs offered at colleges, libraries and school districts. Teachers at the sites can help you determine what you need to study and suggest classes or other instruction. You can also prepare through self-study manuals available at bookstores and libraries.
