Holes

Have you ever been to camp? How about a camp where you're forced to dig enormous holes every day? Digging holes and camp usually are not associated together, but Stanley Yelnats is sent to a hole digging camp in the book Holes.

Stanley is sent to Camp Green Lake at the very beginning of the novel because he is blamed for a crime that he did not commit. The novel follows Stanley through his experiences at the camp where he learns important lessons about friendship. The book follows two story lines! As readers learn about Stanley and Camp Green Lake, they also learn about Kissing Kate Barlow, who was an outlaw in the 'Wild West.

If the title or the story sounds familiar, it is probably because you saw or heard about the 2003 movie that had the same title. The movie Holes was based on the book written by Louis Sachar. The movie is a faithful adaptation of the book, but you will still have fun reading the original. Holes is a wonderful book for any reading level. If you like action, adventure, and a few laughs, you will really enjoy reading Holes.

The Witches

This is a fantastical tale about a boy and his grandmother who take a vacation at the same hotel that witches are using to hold their yearly convention! The boy learns about an evil scheme the witches have to eliminate all the children of the world. Readers follow the boy and his grandmother as they scheme and work against the witches to try to stop their horrible plan. This book has plot twists and turns, suspense, and even a few scary parts. If witches and adventures make you excited, you will love this book!

The Witches was written by the famous children's author Roald Dahl. Dahl has written other books such as Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, all of which, including The Witches, have been adapted into movies. If you have read and enjoyed other Roald Dahl books, you will have a good time reading The Witches. Dahl uses humor, character development, and lots of great descriptions and details to bring his books to life.

Little Women

In her book Little Women, Louisa May Alcott brings to life the tale of the March family, which is made up of four girls. The story starts during the civil war with the girls and their mother celebrating Christmas alone because Mr. March is in the war. The family pulls together during this tough time, and the four daughters have both funny and sad experiences, making the story very real.

Little Women was originally written as two novels but over time the two have been joined together. Amy, Beth, Jo, and Meg have grown up with thousands of children throughout the years, bringing joy to many. If you read and enjoy this novel, don't forget about Louisa May Alcott's other two novels that serve as sequels, Little Men and Jo's Boys.
