The Alabama GED Structure

To obtain your GED, Alabama requires successful completion of the following five sections:

  • Language Arts, Writing (2 Parts)
    • Part I is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions
    • Part II is a 45 minute essay question
  • Reading
  • Mathematics (2 Parts)
    • Part 1 allows use of a calculator to aid in problem solving. No calculator is permitted on part II
    • Some questions on both sections will not be multiple choice, requiring the test taker to input their own answers
  • Social Studies
  • Science

Scoring

Standard scores are evaluated on a range of lowest (200) to highest (800). A minimum score of 410 is required on each test to successfully complete that section. In addition, you must score an average of 450.

For those who don't pass on the first try, there is a waiting period of six weeks to retake failed sections or the entire test.

Eligibility

According to the Alabama College System, www.acs.cc.al.us, you must meet all of the following requirements to be allowed to take the GED:

  • Not be enrolled in any school (public or private) registered with the Alabama Department of Education.
  • Be either a legal resident of Alabama, a military member or dependent stationed in Alabama, a non-U.S. citizen who resides in Alabama, or a non-resident who is enrolled in an adult education program that is funded by the Department of Post-secondary Education.
  • Not havea secondary school diploma granted by a public or private school that is registered with Alabama's Department of Education.
  • Meet all other requirements listed on the Alabama College System, www.acs.cc.al.us, website.

Registration and Cost

Register for the Alabama GED at a testing center in your area. Refer to the Alabama College System website, www.acs.cc.al.us, to find the testing location nearest to you. The GED exam fee is $50. For students looking to retake a section, the cost is $10 per section of the exam.

Preparing for the Exam

It is always a good idea to be prepared for the exam. Visit a library, bookstore, or the internet to find materials that reviews subject matter. Adult learning centers or community colleges may also offer courses on GED preparedness.
