GED Illinois: Overview of the Illinois GED

The global marketplace is becoming more competitive each year. It is even tougher for individuals without a high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate. This article will guide you through Illinois' requirements to earning your GED.

According to the GED Illinois, website, www.gedillinois.org, in 2001 Illinois administered the GED test to 46,525 adults at 73 official Testing Centers throughout the state. Of those tested, 26,648 met the passing score requirements and received Illinois High School Equivalency Certificates.

Illinois GED Requirements

Eligibility

Individuals must meet these requirements in order to take the GED exam:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a resident of Illinois
  • Must have withdrawn from high school for at least six months
  • Not a high school graduate
  • Language Arts - Writing (includes 45 minute essay question)
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (calculator may be used on Part 1 only, not Part 2)
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 in each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until passing scores are achieved.

Registration and Fees

  • Registration may be completed at any approved testing center. A list of testing sites can be found at www.gedillinois.org.
  • There is a fee of $35 to take the exam (or $7 per section).
  • Bring photographic identification along with your social security number and proof of residence.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Check with community colleges or adult learning centers for GED prep classes.
