GED Iowa: Earn Your Iowa GED Certificate

Iowa GED Requirements:

Eligibility

Individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam www.state.ia.us:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a resident of Iowa
  • Must have withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken in 7.5 hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing
    • Comprised of a 45 minute essay composition
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
  • Use of a calculator is allowed on Part 1 of the mathematics exam only.
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. The entire exam, or individual sections, may be retaken until a satisfactory score has been achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration many be completed at any approved testing center in Iowa. Visit the State of Iowa Department of Education website, www.iowa.gov/educate/, to find a testing center in your area. There is a fee of $75 to take the exam. Bring the required ID with your social security number and proof of residence.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center information about GED prep courses.
