GED Kentucky: Earning Your Kentucky GED
Furthering your education can be one of the biggest steps of your life. Earning your General Education Development (GED) certificate can increase your employment opportunities. This article can help guide you through the process of getting your GED from the state of Kentucky.
Eligibility
Individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam www.kyae.ky.gov:
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older
- Must be a resident of Kentucky
- Must be withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
- Not a high school graduate
Exam Format
The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:
- Language Arts - Writing
- Comprised of a 45-minute essay composition
- Language Arts - Reading
- Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
- The use of a calculator is allowed only on Part 1 of the Mathematics exam
- Science
- Social Studies
Scoring
The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Each section of the test, or the entire test, can be retaken, if necessary.
Registration and Fees
Registration must be completed at any official Kentucky testing center. The Kentucky Adult Education website, www.kyae.ky.gov, has a listing of all approved testing locations. There is a fee of $40 to take the exam (or $8 per section. Also remember to bring the required photo ID along with your social security number and proof of residence.
Preparation
Visit your local library or bookstore to check out the available GED practice materials. To learn more about GED prep courses, log-on to the Kentucky Adult Education website, www.kyae.ky.gov. Taking a prep course can increase your chances of successful completion of the exam.
