Maine GED Requirements:

Eligibility

According to the Maine Department of Education (MDE),www.maine.gov/education, individuals must meet the following requirements to take the GED:

• Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
• Must not be enrolled in a regular high school program
• Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

• Language Arts - Writing
  • A 45 minute essay question.
• Language Arts - Reading
• Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
  • A calculator may be used on Part 1 only.
• Science
• Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2250. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until a passing score is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any of Maine's official testing centers. Contact the Maine Department of Education, www.maine.gov/education, for a list of approved testing centers in the state. There is no fee for Maine residents to take the exam. Bring a government issued picture ID and your social security number.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center information about GED prep courses.
