GED Maryland: Pass the Maryland GED Exams

According to the American Council of Education www.acenet.edu, more than 95 percent of U.S. employers consider GED to be equal to traditional high school graduates when it comes to to hiring, salary, and advancement.

Maryland GED Requirements:

Eligibility

According to the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, www.epfl.net, the following criteria must be met in order for someone to take the GED exam:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Must have lived in Maryland for three months or longer
  • Must have been out of high school for six months or more
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing (45 minute essay)
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (2 parts - a calculator may be used on Part 1 only)
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until they achieve passing scores.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at an official Maryland testing center. Fees vary by location, so please check with your testing center. Remember to bring the required photo identification along with proof of Maryland Residency and your social security number. Contact the Maryland State Department of Education, www.marylandpublicschools.org, for testing center locations, as well as general GED information.

Preparation

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center information about GED prep courses. The Maryland Adult Literacy Resource Center website, www.umbc.edu, offers online GED prep courses.
