GED Michigan: Learning About the Michigan GED Test

Michigan GED Requirements:

Eligibility

According to Michigan's Department of Education (MDE) www.mde.state.mi.us, the following requirements must be met in order to take the GED exam:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
  • Must be a resident of Michigan
  • Must have withdrawn from high school for six months or more
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing (includes 45 minute essay question)
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (calculator may be used on Part 1 only, not on Part 2)
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until passing scores are achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration or application for the exam is not required. There are no exam fees for Michigan residents. Locations of Michigan GED testing centers are available at www.michigan.gov/.

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center information about GED prep courses.
