GED Montana: Prepare for the Montana GED Test

The Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) states that the Montana GED is a battery of tests measuring students' academic skills, comparing them to those of high school graduates. If the GED is passed, Montana High School Equivalency Diplomas are issued and these are accepted by colleges and employees as being equivalent to regular high school diplomas.

Montana GED Requirements:

Eligibility

You must meet the following requirements in order to take Montana's GED exam:

• Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
• Must be a resident of Montana
• Must have withdrawn from high school for six months
• Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

• Language Arts - Writing (includes 45 minute essay question)
• Language Arts - Reading
• Mathematics (calculator may be used on Part 1, not Part 2)
• Science
• Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until passing scores are achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any official Montana testing center. Testing costs $48.00, retesting $12.00 for Language Arts/Writing (with essay component) and $6.00 per section for Language Arts/Reading; Mathematics; Science and Social Studies. Be sure to bring all required photo ID along with your social security number, and proof of Montana Residency.
