GED New Mexico: Learn The New Mexico GED Requirements

According to the American Council of Education (ACE), www.acenet.edu, more than 95 percent of U.S. employers consider GED graduates to be equivalent to traditional high school graduates in regard to hiring, salary, and advancement opportunity.

New Mexico GED Requirements:

Eligibility

According to the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMDE), www.ped.state.nm.us, individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam:

• Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
• Must be a resident of New Mexico
• Must have withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
• Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

• Language Arts - Writing
  • A 45 minute essay question.
• Language Arts - Reading
• Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
  • A calculator may be used on Part 1 only.
• Science
• Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until a passing score is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration may be completed at any of New Mexico's official testing centers. Each testing center varies in price, you will need to contact your closest facility and inquire about rates. Remember to bring photo ID, proof of New Mexico residency, and your social security number to the testing facility.
