GED South Dakota: Learn About the South Dakota GED Exam

Be prepared to enter today's workforce by earning your General Education Development (GED) certificate. This article will discuss the state of South Dakota's requirements for earning a GED certificate.

The GED exam offers adults who failed to complete high school an opportunity to earn a high school diploma credential. Individuals must demonstrate major skills (12th grade competencies that would have been acquired in a 4-year high school education) in a battery of tests covering 5 major subject areas.

South Dakota's GED Requirements:

Eligibility

Individuals must meet the following requirements in order to take the GED exam www.adultliteracy.org:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older (age requirements may vary, check with your local testing center for more details)
  • Must be a resident of South Dakota
  • Must have withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least six months
  • Not a high school graduate

Exam Format

The exam consists of five different subject sections taken over seven and a half hours:

  • Language Arts - Writing
    • A 45 minute essay question.
  • Language Arts - Reading
  • Mathematics (Part 1 and 2)
    • A calculator may be used on Part 1 only.
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Scoring

The score ranges from a minimum of 200 to a maximum of 800 on each subject section. The minimum required on each section is 410. The total minimum required for all subject sections is 2050. Individuals may retake all or part of the exam until a passing score is achieved.

Registration and Fees

Registration must be completed at any South Dakota testing center. There is a fee of $60 to take the exam. Bring sufficient ID with your social security number and proof of residence.

Visit your local library or bookstore to view the available GED practice materials. Inquire at your local community college or adult learning center for information about GED prep courses.
