According to the the United States Department of Education (USDE), www.ed.gov, parents help their children with homework in a variety of ways.

Make Time for Homework

First, set a regular homework time. This demonstrates to your children that even though they are maturing and growing in age and intelligence, they are still expected to complete all of their homework assignments. By setting a time as a family, you will know when to be available to answer your children's homework questions and monitor their progress in school.

Since many students need an hour or so to unwind and relax after school before starting their studies, students should take a role in setting their own homework time. This allows your high school students to find a time that is most effective for them, while also encouraging them to take partial ownership in this family rule, increasing the chances that they will adhere to the 'homework hour.'

Homework Inventory

Next, help your high school student succeed by providing necessary homework supplies and resources. Usually, this simply means pens, pencils, and lined paper. However, students may also need a ruler and a calculator for their math classes. High schools usually issue the necessary textbooks for assignments, but if a student is working on a research project, they may need a ride to the library or access to encyclopedias, a dictionary, and a thesaurus.

Staying Connected

Finally, help your high school student by monitoring assignments. This does not necessarily mean correcting each homework problem. Instead, make sure you are available to answer questions during the allotted homework time. Even if you are not able to answer all of the questions, or if your student has no questions at all, your presence shows your child respect and support. It is easy for a high school student to become frustrated and want to give up on homework, but if your child knows you are allocating time to help with studies, it will encourage perseverance.
