How Tutoring Can Help Students Prepare for the SAT or ACT

Taking the SAT or ACT can be stressful for any student. Tutoring can help a student be better prepared for testing and may help to reduce test anxiety.

Find available tutors

Taking the SAT or ACT may be one of the most stressful moments of a students' high school career, particularly if they feel they are underperforming. There are many reasons this may be happening. Some students experience test anxiety, which can cause them to panic during a test. Other reasons may include a lack of preparation. No matter what the case, tutoring can help.

Learning Centers

Many community learning centers offer SAT or ACT prep programs, usually involving one tutor and a small group of students. During the tutoring meeting, students work together to solve math problems and verbal questions. If the session only meets once or twice a month, then there may be more students assigned to a tutor. Regardless of the tutor-student ratio, tutors teach students specific test-taking strategies, such as making educated guesses (depending on the exams scoring structure, this may be inappropriate), and the process of elimination. Students will also be given practice tests to track their progress. The cost of this tutoring service depends upon the learning center.

Private Tutors

One common strategy for preparing for the SAT or ACT involves students purchasing prep books. Most prep books provide many practice questions and tests for students to use. However, many students find it difficult to be disciplined enough to use these books on a regular basis. If this is the case, you may want to consider hiring a private tutor. Hiring a tutor may result in the student to become more serious about the preparation. A tutor can also provide explanations for particularly difficult concepts.

Online Tutoring Programs

More students than ever prefer incorporating technology into their learning strategies. For students who work well with computers, try online test prep tutoring. Many online programs provide similar questions and worksheets found in prep books or provided at learning centers. They also include practice tests as part of their curriculum.
