How to Find an ESL Tutor

Tutoring can help students to learn English as a second language (ESL) and become more comfortable in speaking it. This article gives advice on finding an ESL tutor.

Find available tutors

ESL is an acronym for English as a Second Language. Many schools have ESL programs to help students develop their speaking and writing skills in English. Although teachers of ESL programs make an effort to provide individual attention for their students, some students need even more attention, possibly tutoring.

Depending on the availability of ESL tutors in your area, finding an ESL tutor may be difficult. It may especially be difficult if your child doesn't speak one of the common second languages for that region. For instance, if your child is fluent in Chinese and lives in an area where Spanish is one of the most common foreign languages, there will probably be more tutors who are fluent in Spanish than Chinese. However, there are options available.

Ask Around

You can begin by asking the ESL teachers at your local school if they would be willing to teach your child outside of class. Some teachers may prefer recommending you to other ESL teachers they may know instead of teaching him or her for various reasons. You could also try your local community center to see if any ESL courses are available. Enrolling your child in an after-school ESL program may provide him or her with the practice needed.

Consider a Collegiate Approach

Another option is seeking services from a local university or college. Universities such as Rice University, www.ruf.rice.edu, encourage bilingual students to volunteer in their community and help others develop their language skills. You could post an ad on a university's career listings for college students to view. Hiring a bilingual college student may be useful, especially for those students who prefer to work with someone who is somewhat closer to their own age.
