Middle School Concepts: Seventh Grade Reading

Seventh grade students are introduced to many new skills, especially when it comes to reading. Students will begins to study literary essays, persuasive papers, and are often required to complete research projects.
It is critical for middle schoolers to develop a high level of reading and writing proficiency because it is a skill used in all of their academic classes such as history, science and even math. You can assess your child's progress at home, in order to insure that he or she is mastering the reading skills necessary for success.
Vocabulary
Seventh graders should be able to grasp the concept of word roots by the end of the year. Middle schoolers will learn how to use knowledge of root words to find the meanings of new and unfamiliar words. This skill will greatly enhance their reading comprehension capabilities. Students of the seventh grade will likely learn Anglo-Saxon, Greek, and Latin roots to help them improve their vocabulary.
Literary Analysis
Seventh grade English classes focus on plot development, analyzing conflicts, subplots, and parallel plots throughout a text. Middle schoolers should also recognize themes in literary works such as novels, poetry, and dramas. Seventh graders should also be able to describe and analyze characters and contrasting points of view.
Reading, Writing, and Editing
The development of technical and business document skills is also enhanced during the seventh grade. Before entering the eighth grade, a student should be able to tell what type of information is missing from documents like letters, memos, and reports. Students should be able review a report or essay written by a peer and make comments and suggestions to improve the overall quality of the writing.
Parents need to be active in their child's education by monitoring their understanding and mastery of reading. This can be done by helping your child with his or her homework, answering any questions they may have, or scheduling regular conferences of phone calls with their teachers to discuss their progression.
