Ways School Staff Can Help Children Transition to Middle School

There are several ways that teachers and faculty can help middle schoolers establish a sense of belonging and prepare to succeed in their new surroundings. New students and parents rely on staff within the school to help explain unfamiliar circumstances and provide guidance.

It is important to make sure that your school's curriculum is a fluid and logical continuation from the student's grade school. If possible, meet with teachers from the elementary school to discuss transition points in the material. Additionally, middle school teachers should visit with elementary schools to establish and uphold personal contacts.

It is also important to make connections with the students' families, and letters can be sent home welcoming students and their families. Make sure new students know about upcoming activities, and give them ample opportunity to get involved; it helps to send personal invitations to parents and students so they really feel welcome. On the same note, Parent Teacher Association members should call each new family welcoming them to the school. Parent Teacher handbooks should also be distributed.

Teachers can get involved with the welcoming process, as well as their classes. Have students from middle school classes exchange letters with elementary schoolers, and answer questions the younger students might have.
