Starfall.coms Reading Instruction

Starfall.com provides a systematic teaching approach to phonics as well as reinforcement and practice. Its child-friendly activities are motivating and educational, which helps kids meet specific learning objectives. The activities are suitable for kids in pre-school through second grade, English language learners and children with disabilities.

The activities are categorized into four stages: ABCs, Learn to Read, It's Fun to Read and I'm Reading. In the ABCs section, your child can learn letter sounds and vowels by clicking on a letter and hearing its sound. Next, a teacher reads some words with the letter to reinforce the sound and spelling, which is followed by a short nursery rhyme using the introduced letter.

It's Fun to Read offers activities for children who have mastered the basics and are ready to expand their world through reading. They can select different categories to read poems, riddles and tongue twisters or learn about magic and art.

ReadWriteThink's Resources

ReadWriteThink has online reading tools for children in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The tools on this site provide practice in phonics, word recognition and comprehension.

For instance, Story Map is a graphic organizer designed to help students understand character, conflict, setting and resolution through pre-writing and post-reading activities. Fact Fragment Frenzy is an online, interactive activity for students in grades 1-6, which challenges them to learn the fact-finding process. In addition, there are resources for parents that include at-home activities, projects and games.
