Boston GED: Earn Your GED in Boston, MA
The GED (General Educational Development) test was created for adults who would like to earn an equivalent high school diploma. Read on to find out how Boston residents can qualify for a Massachusetts State High School Equivalency Diploma.
What Is the GED?
The GED is a battery of five tests in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies and science. The questions include content typically taught in the high school curriculum, so you can expect to be tested on a wide range of topics. Most of the questions are multiple-choice, with the exception of one essay for the writing portion of the test.
What Are the Eligibility Requirements?
You're eligible to take the GED and receive the diploma if you're 18 and aren't enrolled in school. If you're 16 or 17, you may take the GED, but you have to provide a letter of withdrawal from your last school of attendance.
You must also prove that you're a resident of Massachusetts or that you last attended a secondary school in Massachusetts. In addition, military personnel assigned to Massachusetts or members of their families residing with them are also eligible for the Massachusetts GED diploma.
Non-residents of Massachusetts are allowed to take the test. However, their test scores will be sent to their home state for issuance of the diploma or certificate.
What's a Passing Score?
You need a combined score of 2,250 on the GED to pass. This averages to 450 per test. Any score lower than a 410 must be retaken.
Where Are the Testing Locations?
The GED must be taken at an official testing center. You can find the one nearest you through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, which has contact information for all centers in the state.
How Do I Prepare?
You can prepare on your own by purchasing or checking out manuals and study guides from your local library. Sample questions and other preparation materials are also available on the American Council on Education (ACE) website (acenet.edu), the official administrator of the GED test.
Massachusetts also has their Adult Literacy Hotline, which can give you information about GED preparation programs near you. Many adult education programs offered through school districts and community also offer GED preparation courses.
