New York State's Office of Assessment Policy, Development and Administration (APDA) offers both ELA and math sample questions and information on what units will appear on the test, as well as how the exams are scored. The math questions involve using rulers and protractors to measure, performing division, rounding, greater than or less than, reading graphs and converting simple fractions into decimals. The ELA standards include reading and interpreting text, evaluating literary elements, contrasting pieces of text and recognizing the strength of arguments.

On the right-hand side of the page, you can find 'test samplers' for math and English/language arts. The sample test books are PDF files, so you can print them out along with the answer keys. There are two math books for 5th graders. The first test book features multiple-choice questions. The second book requires students to write their answers and show their work. The sample questions in the ELA test will first ask your child to read a few paragraphs from a text, and then answer questions about what was read.
