What Is the GED Test?

The GED test measures academic skills and concepts normally acquired by the end of high school. It is divided into five sub-tests including reading, writing, social studies, science and mathematics.

You are allowed a prescribed amount of time for each test, and the entire test battery takes about 7.5 hours to complete. Most colleges and employers in the U.S. accept the GED certificate as equivalent to a high school diploma.

Who Is Eligible to Take the Test?

Residents of Colorado are eligible to take the exam if they are at least 17 and:

  • Are not enrolled in an accredited high school
  • Do not have a GED unless higher scores are requested by an employer, college or university
  • Have an approved form of photo identification, such as a Colorado driver's license, passport or military ID

Under certain conditions, you may take the exam at 16 by submitting an official age-waiver form found on the Colorado Department of Education's (CDE) GED website

Where Is the Test Given?

The GED can only be taken at an official test center authorized by the national GED Testing Service and the CDE. The CDE lists locations and contact information on its website. Each center has its own schedule for administering the exam. Accommodations are given for candidates with documented special needs.

What if I Don't Pass?

A total score of 2250 is considered passing if each sub-test score is at least 410. If any score falls below 410, it must be retaken. You may retake any test or the full battery. There are three versions of the exam available per calendar year.

How Do I Prepare for the GED?

Adult education centers offer courses and practice tests. A timed practice test will give you an idea of how well you'll perform on the actual GED. Classes can help you prepare extensively in each subject area. Adult centers in Colorado are listed on the CDE website.

You can prepare on your own through self-study manuals and other resources found at bookstores and public libraries. Sample questions and recommendations for online courses and practice tests can be found on the official GED Testing Service website.
