Comprehension Websites for Kids

Every time your child reads a text, whether it's for school or for pleasure, he or she is working on reading comprehension skills. You can enhance your child's reading experience by asking him or her questions about the text and encouraging critical thinking. Using reading help websites can also be a solid way for your child to become a stronger reader by practicing at home.

ReadWriteThink's Reading Comprehension Tools

For strong reading comprehension tools, check out the student interactives from ReadWriteThink. These interactives are for kids in grades K-12 and cover a number of reading themes, such as analysis and inquiry, poetry, prose and the many parts of the English language. In order for the interactives to work, you'll need a recent version of Adobe Flash installed on your computer. One comprehension-related student interactive is the literary elements map, which will help your child break down the parts of a story or book.

This site also offers a wide number of learning tools like a Venn diagram creator and a Mystery Cube for summarization. There are also learning strategy guides and lesson plans that you can use to teach your child at home.

Reading Printables and Worksheets from Education.com

Education.com is a website where you and your child can find a wide variety of reading comprehension worksheets and printables for free. Signing up for the site is optional, but you will need to have a recent version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view the worksheets. You can organize the worksheets by grade level, subject and sub-topic. Although comprehension is itself a reading sub-topic, there are several other sub-topics that can help your child better comprehend what he or she reads, including vocabulary, literary analysis, word families, sight words and more. The comprehension section includes hundreds of worksheets for grades for every level from preschool to high school.
