Sample Tests from EDinformatics

Here, you can find PDF test books from several states for at-home practice. Fourth grade ELA tests are included for New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and Texas. If your state is not included here, check with your state's department of education for sample tests.

The ELA exam for New York, for example, features three test books and a bubble sheet for your child to fill in her answers. Book one features fiction and nonfiction reading passages, along with multiple-choice comprehension questions. Book two contains a listening assessment in which your child listens to a story and then responds to a short answer and an essay question. There is a separate passage for you to read aloud. Finally, book three assesses writing skills. There is also a scoring guide that you can use to look for patterns in the questions that she got wrong.

Test Prep from Studyzone.org

You may find the review lessons and practice at the Elementary Test Prep Center useful for working on reading, writing and listening skills. The fourth grade page is categorized by skill, such as word analysis, comprehension and writing strategies. All the skills and lessons are tied to New York standards, but you may still find this to be a practical resource for any standardized test. If your child needs additional vocabulary practice, for instance, you can first review the lesson with your child and then put the lesson to use immediately with the practice activity.

Practice Tests at FCAT Express

Reading comprehension is a major component of most state standardized tests. At FCAT Express, you'll find reading comprehension practice tests that are aligned with Florida's standards but can be useful practice for any state ELA test. Your fourth grader has the option of taking the tests online and having his answers scored as he goes, or he can use the printable versions that come with answer keys.

These tests were developed by the University of South Florida and the Florida Center for Instructional Technology to help students prepare for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Each test features a reading passage, followed by multiple-choice, essay and short answer questions. Your child may be tested on certain skills, such as decoding vocabulary and figurative language, making comparisons and using details from the text to support his answer.
