Overview of Summer Writing Programs for Elementary Children

Summer School

Some schools offer summer programs across various subjects that may not be typically offered during the regular school year. Your child's teacher may also know of programs in the area where children's writing programs are offered.

Many local libraries offer reading and writing classes for kids. Additionally, they may have information on where to locate writing programs for elementary children.

Community Colleges

Although they may charge a fee, children's classes are often offered over the summer at community colleges. In addition, attending classes at a local community college may give your older child an opportunity to get some early college experience.

National Writing Project (NWP)

The National Writing Project is a good resource for finding writing programs for kids. After you go to the NWP website, you can click on an interactive directory to locate a participating college near you. Many of the colleges offer summer writing programs for elementary children. The classes are taught by credentialed teachers who have had additional training in using innovative approaches to writing instruction.

For example, Angelo State University has a ten day writer's camp for teens and elementary school children. The University of California Irvine also has a summer youth camp for writing. Both of these programs charge a small fee.

Community Recreation Classes

Many cities offer children's enrichment classes over the summer for a small instructor's fee. You can often find creative writing classes or similar classes pairing writing with art or photography.

Start Your Own Program

If you can't find a writing program in your area, start one yourself. Contact local teachers or writers to see if they would be interested in teaching the writing class. Your child's friends may enjoy getting together to better their writing skills.

You can also join with other parents to form a playwriting group. You can check out a playwriting book from the library and help your child and friends write and perform in a play, which they can even videotape.
