How Can an Online Tutor Help My Child?

If your child is struggling in school, it's often necessary to get him or her help right away so that your child doesn't fall too far behind. You can ask your child's teacher to provide extra instruction and materials. You can also sit down with your child and do your best to help him or her catch up in the areas where the most help is needed. However, if your child needs more individualized attention to succeed, you may want to consider hiring a tutor.

Many tutoring companies and private tutors offer high quality instruction and can individualize lessons to meet your child's needs. However, it can be difficult to arrange your family's schedule around regular tutoring times. Hiring a private one-on-one tutor can also be expensive. If your family is very busy, or if you're on a budget, you may want to consider hiring an online tutor.

Tutoring Companies

Many national tutoring companies offer both face-to-face tutoring and online tutoring. Your child can study math, reading, social studies, language arts, writing and science, as well as improve his or her study skills with an online tutoring company. Different companies offer different options depending upon the needs of your child.

With some companies, you can purchase unlimited online tutoring for a month, so your child can log on whenever he or she needs help. It's also possible to purchase a certain number of tutoring hours per week. This way, your child can log on and meet with his or her tutor at a convenient time. With other companies, you can pay for tutoring by the minute. This can be helpful for times when your child only needs minor help, such as with an individual reading assignment or math problem.

Private Tutors

Although it may take a little bit more searching, you also can hire a private online tutor who isn't affiliated with a company. You may be able to arrange this by perusing your local newspapers or by checking out various online classified services. If your child is receiving help via a Web cam from a tutor who resides in your area, it could be possible to arrange a lesson in person for extra help. For example, your child may meet his or her private tutor online regularly once a week for a 2-hour math lesson. However, if a big math test is coming up, it could be possible for your child's tutor to come over and give your child more personal, in-depth help for that specific test.
