What Are the Benefits of Elementary-Level Book Series?

When your child reads books from series, he or she can stay with the same characters, settings, writing styles and genres. The consistency of reading a similarly formatted series can improve comprehension and help kids become lifelong readers. The following list includes some classic series as well as newer ones that may appeal to your child.

What Are Some Fun Reading Series for Kids?

Ghostville Elementary by Marcia Thornton Jones and Debbie Dadey

This series features a class of 3rd graders who are moved to a classroom in the school basement, only to discover that it's haunted. The books follow students Cassidy, Jeff and Nina as they deal with the mischievous ghosts that keep trying to sabotage the students' activities.

Curious George by H.A. Rey and Margret Rey

The original series consists of seven books, but newer Curious George books have been written by different authors. In these classic tales, a little monkey named George is captured in Africa by a character known only as 'the Man with the Yellow Hat,' who takes him across the sea to live in a zoo. George escapes from the zoo and ends up living with the Man in the Yellow Hat, and they have several adventures together.

Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park

These popular books are about the humorous antics of Junie B., who is a kindergartner at the start of the series. She's a bit of a loudmouth and she's always getting into trouble at school and at home. Young kids can relate to Junie B. because the books are written from her point of view.

Magic Tree House by Mary Pope Osbourne

The original Magic Tree House series has 28 books. These fantasy stories are about two kids, Annie and Jack, who live in Frog Creek, Pennsylvania. They discover a magic tree house that can transport them to the past or the future. They witness many historical events and meet many famous figures, including Morgan le Fay, King Arthur, William Shakespeare, Clara Barton and George Washington.

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner

This classic series was first published in 1924 and is comprised of more than 100 titles - although only the first 19 books were penned by Warner. The stories are about four orphans named Violet, Benny, Henry and Jessie, who solve mysteries at home and away.

How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

This fantasy series tells the coming-of-age story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, a Viking with the power to tame dragons. The books chronicle Hiccup's adventures with his friends - known as the 'Hairy Hooligans' - and some dragons.
