FCAT Sample Test for Fourth Grade Students

The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is administered to Florida students in grades 3-10. Depending on the grade, students may be tested in math, reading and science; fourth graders are tested in reading and math. Use the following resources to find sample tests and review for your fourth grader.

Practice Tests from the Florida Department of Education

Here, you can print test books for fourth grade math and reading from previous years. You can also find answer books, so you can grade your child's work and identify areas for improvement. The books open as PDF files.

The sample fourth grade math test features typical math equations as well as graphs and charts. The entire section is made up of multiple-choice questions. However, as your child takes the test at home, you may want to provide scrap paper so she can solve the problem alone without relying on the multiple-choice options.

The reading test book contains passages and multiple-choice comprehension questions. There are also short answer questions throughout, where students are required to use details from the passage to support their answers.

FCAT Express's Strategies

Although this site is intended for teachers, you can use the reading strategies and resources for at-home review. The teaching strategies section features nine reading techniques that students must know in order to succeed on the FCAT. Some strategies include identifying the author's purpose, using graphic organizers and creating story maps. For each strategy, there's an overview and an activity that you can give to your child. The cause and effect activity, for instance, features a story and an interactive quiz in which students must identify the cause and the effect in the story.

Also on this site are FCAT practice tests, which include a reading passage along with both multiple-choice, extended response and short answer questions. If your child takes the online versions of the test, the answers are graded instantly. Printable versions of the practice tests are also available. Finally, you may find the FCAT rubric page helpful for when you grade your child's work. Knowing what your fourth grader will be graded on can help you figure out his strengths and weaknesses.

Vocabulary Practice from Vocabulary.co.il

The reading sections of the FCAT can be especially difficult for students who lack a strong vocabulary. Help your child gain confidence as a reader through these free vocabulary games for fourth graders. The games cover parts of speech, context clues, synonyms, antonyms and word parts, among others.
